Dispersion-shifted fiber is a single-mode fiber, model G.653.

With the use of optical amplifiers and wavelength division multiplexing technology, in optical fiber communication systems, the optical power coupled into a single-mode fiber core has reached a level that can cause the optical fiber to produce nonlinear effects. The non-linear effect of single-mode fiber has many special effects on the performance of fiber-optic communication systems.

When the operating wavelength of the single-mode fiber is 1.3Pm, the mode field diameter is about 9Pm, and its transmission loss is about 0.3dB / km. At this time, the zero dispersion wavelength is exactly at 1.3pm. In the quartz optical fiber, the transmission loss of the 1.55pm segment is the smallest (about 0.2dB / km) from the raw material. Since the already practical erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) works in the 1.55pm band, if it can achieve zero dispersion in this band, it is more conducive to the long-distance transmission of the 1.55Pm band. Therefore, clever use of the synthetic cancellation characteristics of the dispersion of the quartz material in the optical fiber material and the dispersion of the core structure can make the original zero dispersion in the 1.3Pm section and shift to the 1.55pm section also constitute zero dispersion. Therefore, it is named as dispersion shifted fiber (DSF: DispersionShifted Fiber). The method of increasing the structural dispersion is mainly to improve the refractive index distribution performance of the fiber core.
