Combo PON Solution

In recent years, access broadband services have flourished. On the one hand, the rapid development of high-bandwidth services such as 4K TV, 3D games, HD video and live-action interaction; on the other hand, fierce market competition and national broadband policy drive, broadband operators Accelerated access to the construction and deployment of broadband networks. The current mainstream GPON network is gradually unable to meet the bandwidth demand of the continuously growing high-bandwidth service. Operators need to consider new technologies to provide higher bandwidth, better services, enhance user experience, and create new value points. When GPON upgrades to 10G GPON, operators need to consider a variety of needs, including reuse of existing resources, rapid deployment, and forward and backward compatibility issues. The 10G GPON technology that is currently mature and commercially deployed can meet this demand and solve the contradiction between business development and insufficient bandwidth.

Combo GPON

GPON upgrade to 10G GPON has two external Combo PON solutions and an optical module. The external multiplexer solution needs to add OLT frame, rack, 10G PON line card, external multiplexer, fiber jumper and ODF frame and other supporting equipment. The construction cost is high, the space of the equipment room is large, and the construction and wiring are complicated. Management and maintenance are difficult. In addition, the optical power loss introduced by the external multiplexer also affects the optical power budget of the ONU of the existing network, and there is a risk of affecting the user's service. On the other hand, the Combo PON solution with the optical module is combined, and the GPON and 10G GPON optical wavelengths are dual-channel combined in one optical module and output from the same optical port. When 10G GPON upgrade is performed, only the Combo PON line card is replaced. GPON line card on the original OLT, the fiber on the original GPON line card is cut to the Combo PON line card to achieve the coexistence of GPON and 10G GPON. The solution reuses the ODN and the original equipment frame, and does not need to add related equipment and external multiplex equipment. Compared with the external multiplexer solution, the space of the equipment room is small, the network upgrade is simple, the maintenance is easy, and the service is quickly opened. It does not affect the existing network business and the overall investment is small.

Combo, as its name suggests, is a combination of CPON PON, a combination of GPON and 10G GPON, which uses two technologies to use different carrier wavelengths to combine two wavelengths in one optical module to achieve independent transmission of GPON and 10G GPON optical signals. And receive processing, compatible with existing GPON network services, and provide high-bandwidth services on demand, reuse existing network equipment and ODN, avoid changes in existing network resources and additional space in the equipment room, and replace user-side ONUs as needed according to service package upgrades. The terminal implements fast and smooth upgrade of high-bandwidth services.

The Combo PON line card supports the line card of the Combo PON optical module. You can replace the line card on the deployed GPON OLT with the Combo PON line card to upgrade the 10G GPON and quickly implement the high-bandwidth service of the 10G PON. The Combo PON networking architecture is shown in Figure 1.

The Combo PON solution only needs to replace the line card to achieve a smooth upgrade of high-bandwidth services. Compared with the upgrade mode of the external multiplexer solution, it has the following advantages:

● Save space in the equipment room and simplify operation and maintenance

The Combo PON solution does not require the addition of external devices and related packages. In the case of GPON full-fit upgrades, the space of the machine room can be greatly saved. For example, when a rack in a machine room is fully equipped with a two-box GPON OLT, if you want to upgrade to 10G GPON, the Combo PON solution can save more than 60% of the space of the equipment room. At the same time, there is no new equipment related equipment, avoiding the problem of more operation and maintenance management, and saving CAPEX and OPEX for operators in general.

● Reduce initial investment and smooth investment income

The cost of the current 10G GPON ONU terminal is higher than that of the GPON ONU. The Combo PON deployment solution can be used to upgrade the ONU of the user's home as needed according to the bandwidth upgrade requirements of the home user. Deployment, avoiding the high cost investment of the terminal directly brought by the 10G PON upgrade, and quickly achieving a balance between investment and revenue.

● Does not affect the existing network GPON service, smooth network upgrade

In the large-scale deployment of GPON services on the existing network, the optical power budget of some regions and some users will be tight. If an external multiplexer scheme is adopted, at least 1.5dB of insertion loss will be introduced, and there is a risk that the existing GPON ONU will not work normally. , which in turn affects the existing network business. The Combo PON solution is used to compensate for the optical power loss of the combined wave after the internal wave is built in the optical module, so as to ensure that the output of the GPON and 10G GPON optical power budget remains unchanged. influences.

● Reduce the cost of central office deployment

The Combo PON upgrade solution can reduce the deployment cost of the central office. For the Combo PON and the external multiplexer solution, we compare the deployment cost of the central office and the cost of the equipment space for the 5-year life cycle. The Combo PON solution is more external than the external multiplexer. The program can save 24% of the cost.

In summary, operators can use the Combo PON solution to quickly and flexibly deliver high-bandwidth services, improve user experience, enhance market competitiveness, and create more value, thereby achieving sustained growth in corporate profits.
