The Difference Between CWDM And DWDM

CWDM is a low-cost WDM transmission technology for the access layer of the metropolitan area network. Effectively save fiber resources and networking costs, it solves the two problems of fiber shortage and multi-service transparent transmission. It can build the network and start business in a short time.

CWDM structure

Advantages of CWDM:

※ The most important advantage of CWDM is the low cost of equipment.

※ It can reduce the operating cost of the network.

※ Can significantly increase the transmission capacity of optical fiber and increase the utilization rate of optical fiber resources.

※ Small size and low power consumption.

※ It has good flexibility and scalability

CWDM advantages

DWDM can combine and transmit different wavelengths in the same fiber at the same time. To ensure effectiveness, one fiber is converted into multiple virtual fibers. DWDM usually has two application forms: open DWDM and integrated DWDM.

Advantages of DWDM:

※ Its protocol and transmission speed are not related.

※The combiner and demultiplexer of the integrated DWDM system are used separately at the sending end and the receiving end

※ The integrated DWDM equipment is simple in structure and smaller in size, only about one-fifth of the space occupied by open DWDM, saving machine room resources

※Integrated DWDM system only uses passive components (such as multiplexer or demultiplexer) at the receiving end and sending end. Telecom operators can order directly from device manufacturers to reduce the supply link and lower the cost, thus saving equipment costs.

DWDM advantages

CWDM and DWDM are both wavelength division multiplexers, so what is the difference between them? CWDM (Sparse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing), we can literally see the difference between the two: "Dense" and "Sparse". Sparse wavelength division multiplexing, as the name implies, is a close relative of dense wavelength division multiplexing.

The difference is mainly reflected in the following three points:

1) The CWDM carrier channel spacing is wide, therefore, only 5 to 6 wavelengths of light waves can be reused on the same fiber, the difference between the "sparse" and "dense" titles comes from this;

2) CWDM modulated laser uses uncooled laser, while DWDM uses cooled laser. Cooling laser adopts temperature tuning, and non-cooling laser adopts electronic tuning. Now in general enterprise application providers, CWDM is very popular. Simply put: DWDM is a subdivision of CWDM.

3) The equipment environment is different. CWDM is mainly used in the convergence layer and access layer; DWDM is used in the railway communication working environment.
