What is CWDM SFP optical transceiver

CWDM SFP optical transceiver is an optical transceiver that uses CWDM technology. It is similar to traditional SFP modules and supports hot plugging. The CWDM SFP optical transceiver can be inserted into the SFP port or slot of a switch or router to connect the port to the optical fiber network.

The CWDM SFP optical transceiver has 8 wavelengths, the wavelength range is 1470 nm to 1610 nm. According to 8 different wavelengths, 8 optical transceivers of different colors are designed, and the optical transceivers of different colors correspond to different wavelength ranges.

What is DWDM SFP optical transceiver?

DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) SFP optical transceiver is a dual-fiber bidirectional 10 Gigabit optical transceiver that can provide high-capacity bandwidth in the network, and has 32 fixed wavelengths that can support the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 100 GHz wavelength .

The channel interval of DWDM SFP optical transceiver has different intervals such as 0.4nm, 0.8nm, 1.6nm, etc. according to needs. Its interval is smaller, so additional wavelength control devices are required, and the cost will be higher. However, DWDM SFP optical transceiver has a very key advantage, that is, its protocol and transmission speed are not related. The appearance of the DWDM SFP optical transceiver is shown in the figure below.

Where are CWDM optical transceivers and DWDM optical transceivers used?

CWDM SFP optical transceivers are widely used in point-to-point networks of Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel network equipment in telecommunications and data centers. DWDM SFP optical transceivers are mainly used in long-distance optical synchronous digital transmission networks, such as 200km link and 80km link Ethernet/fiber channel can also be used.

Which is better, CWDM SFP optical transceiver or DWDM SFP optical transceiver?

From a cost point of view, CWDM SFP optical transceivers are cheaper than DWDM SFP optical transceivers. The CWDM SFP optical transceiver provides a convenient and low-cost solution for the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel.

On the other hand, DWDM usually uses denser channel spacing and is used in large optical networks over longer distances. If you are looking for a long-distance SFP module and want to have better scalability, DWDM SFP optical transceiver is the ideal choice.

Conclusion:

The CWDM SFP optical transceiver is a multi-rate optical transceiver with a transmission distance of 20-40km, 40-80km and 80-120km, and different colors mark optical transceivers with different wavelengths, which can better meet customer requirements.
