A Record Of 319 Tbps Optical Fiber Data Transmission Rate Set By A Japanese Research Team
Recently, a team of Japanese engineers achieved a data transmission rate of 319 Tbps through an optical fiber network. While setting a new world record with the line of more than 3,000 kilometers (1864 miles) in length, this new research result is also compatible with the current infrastructure. For reference, the world record less than a year ago was 178 Tbps-about seven times that of the earlier experimental photonic chip (44.2 Tbps).

The research team pointed out that this breakthrough was achieved on the existing optical fiber infrastructure with the help of more advanced technical means. Compared with the standard single-mode solution, the four-mode solution was selected for this test.
The key is a technology called Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), which can divide the signal into multiple wavelengths that can be transmitted simultaneously. A third "band" that is rarely used is added to carry more data, and a variety of optical amplification technologies are used to extend the effective signal transmission distance. #Optical Fiber #WDM
