On the occasion of the recent 25th anniversary of the Optical Interconnect Forum, OIF's draft IA implementation of the Optical Convergence 3.2T Module-01.0 for 3.2Tbps CPO modules defines a 3.2T CPO module for Ethernet switches, based on 100G electrical channels and offering 50G channel backward compatibility. The module definition can be used for optical modules as well as passive cable assemblies and provides a bandwidth edge density of 140G/mm to support optical and/or electrical interface implementations for 51.2Tbps converged bandwidth switches.

The new IA includes interoperable provisions for 3.2Tbps CPO modules, including:

8 x 400Gb/s optical interface options For FR4 and DR4 connections

32 x CEI-112G-XSR primary interface (or 32 x CEI-56G-XSR backward compatible mode)

Optical mechanical module provisions

Electrical specifications

Control and management interfaces, supporting existing OIF CMIS regulations
