Orange Tests Nokia PSE-V Coherent Engine Performance On European Fiber Backbone Network

French operator Orange and Finnish equipment maker Nokia have announced the success of their backbone coherent transmission test, which uses the Nokia Photonic Service Engine (PSE-V) chipset. The three-week practice that ended last week witnessed the operation of PSE-V-based high-speed coherent transmission of commercial traffic on the Pan-European backbone network Orange International Network Infrastructure and Services (OINIS).

The trial route ran from a network node in Paris to 15 access points (PoPs) and witnessed the birth of a 400Gbps service with a fiber link of up to 3400km. The collaboration also demonstrated high-speed transmission of up to 600Gbps, and achieved spectral efficiency higher than 6Gbps/GHz over 1,000km. The two companies said that this test proved the effectiveness of significantly increasing the transmission rate, which enables the pan-European backbone network to support the feasibility of using a single pair of fiber for 27 Tbps transmission between major cities such as Paris and Lyon.
