The Wavelength Selector Switch (WSS) is a rapidly evolving ROADM subsystem technology. WSS is based on LC or MEMS optical platforms with low bandwidth, low dispersion, and support for 10/40 Gbit/s optical signals and inherent port-based wavelength definition (Colorless). Using free-space optical switching technology, the number of waves on the upper and lower roads is small, but it can support higher dimensions, with more integrated components and complicated control. WSS-based ROADMs are becoming the technology of choice for ROADMs above 4 degrees.
