British Operators Speed Up The Construction Of Fiber-to-the-home

British Telecom’s fixed-line broadband business Openreach recently stated that it is expected to achieve fiber-optic broadband coverage of 25 million households in 2026. Prior to this March, Openreach had announced a target of 20 million. As of now, the company has 4.5 million households with fiber-optic broadband users, and the future plan is to add 4 million new ones each year. The company also said that in the next five years, they will invest about 21.2 billion US dollars for optical fiber coverage.

Openreach said that the UK government’s current favorable policies on wholesale fiber optic services, tax incentives and strong broadband demand have prompted them to accelerate fiber optic deployment. In addition to the investment in the deployment of optical fiber from the parent company BT, it can also be obtained through joint venture construction.

In the UK, in addition to Openreach, another broadband operator, CityFibre, has recently invested an additional US$1.4 billion to increase the fiber-optic broadband coverage of 2 million households, and is expected to achieve 10 million household coverage by 2025. Giganet also plans to invest US$355 million in Southwest England to cover 300,000 households and businesses. Netomnia's plan is to cooperate with the network architecture company Light Source to achieve 1 million home fiber coverage in the UK by 2024.
