Q: What material is used for PLC splitter?

A: PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) splitters are typically fabricated on a silica (glass) substrate. Other materials used in PLC splitters may include metal for packaging and protection, such as metals, plastics, and ceramics,as well as various materials for connectors and splicing elements, depending on the specific design and application requirements. When selecting materials, it is necessary to consider the environmental conditions that the separator needs to withstand, such as temperature, pressure, chemical properties, etc., so as to select the appropriate material to ensure the performance and reliability of the optical fiber splitter.

Q: About connectors of the splitters, what is the difference between APC and UPC, and how to choose?

A: APC(angle-polished connector) and UPC(ultra-polished connector) differ in color, physical properties, and performance.

Color: The APC connector is marked in green, and the UPC connector is marked in blue.

Physics: The APC bushing end face polishing radius is 8°, while the UPC connector polishing radius is 0°, flat.

Insertion loss: The APC and UPC connectors show the same insertion loss level.

Return loss: The return loss of the APC connector is -65dB, which is better than that of the UPC connector whose return loss is -55dB.

In general, UPC connectors are used in transmission systems designed for digital signal transmission. On the other hand, APC connectors are more suitable for RF video signal transmission, as well as the presence of an open port on the other end of the distributor, which is common in FTTP network designs.
