What are the causes of fiber attenuation?
The optical power in the fiber gradually decreases along the longitudinal axis. The decrease in optical power depends on the wavelength. In the optical fiber link, the main reason for the reduction of optical power is scattering, absorption, and optical power loss caused by connectors and fusion splices. The unit of attenuation is dB.
Causes: There are many reasons for the attenuation of the fiber, mainly: absorption attenuation, including impurity absorption and intrinsic absorption; scattering attenuation, including linear scattering, nonlinear scattering, and incomplete structural scattering; other attenuation, including microbending attenuation . The most important of which is the attenuation caused by impurity absorption.
Fiber attenuation coefficient (fiber attenuation coefficient): the attenuation value of the optical signal power per kilometer of fiber. Unit: dB / km.
Fiber bending loss
Fibers are very sensitive to bending, excessive bending = light overflow. If the bending radius is less than 20x the outer diameter, most of the light will escape from the coating. Single-mode optical cables are more sensitive to bending loss than multi-mode optical cables.
Optical loss occurs in two types of bending: Macrobend and Microbend.
When Macrobend bending is corrected, it can be restored.
Microbend cannot be recovered, for example, caused by tight cable binding.
