What Is ELSFP?
ELSFP stands for External Laser Small Form Factor Pluggable. In a Co Packaged Optics system, optical engines are placed close to the switching ASIC to shorten high speed electrical paths. Rather than locating continuous wave lasers inside the highest temperature area of the switch package, an ELSFP architecture places the laser source in a pluggable and more serviceable position. Dedicated optical fiber assemblies then deliver laser light to the CPO optical engines.
Why ELSFP Matters for CPO Architectures
AI training and inference clusters create intensive communication between GPUs, switches and storage systems. As network speeds evolve from 400G and 800G toward 1.6T and beyond, electrical signal loss, thermal load and serviceability become increasingly important.
ELSFP helps separate the laser source from the high temperature switch package while keeping optical power delivery close to the CPO engine. This gives system designers more flexibility in thermal management, maintenance and high density fiber routing.

What ELSFP Can Support
Thermal Design Flexibility
Locating the laser source outside the highest temperature area of the switch package can support more practical thermal management for CPO systems.
Serviceable Laser Architecture
A pluggable external laser source can make system servicing and replacement more manageable than an architecture where the laser is integrated inside the switch package.
High Density Optical Routing
ELSFP requires carefully designed fiber paths that can support compact routing, controlled bend performance and reliable optical power delivery.
ELSFP Fiber Assemblies Require Precise Configuration
An ELSFP optical assembly is not a standard patch cord. The final configuration must match the system interface, optical engine layout, fiber mapping and space available inside the equipment.
Fiber Type & Alignment
Fiber type must be selected according to the optical architecture. Singlemode or polarization maintaining fiber may be required depending on the laser source and optical engine design.
Fiber Mapping & Routing
Fiber count, routing direction and port mapping must be confirmed before production. Finished customized assemblies cannot be reconfigured after termination.
Optical Performance Control
Insertion loss, return loss, end face quality and inspection requirements should be clearly defined to protect optical power delivery and long term system stability.
Documentation & Identification
Clear port identification, labels and production documentation help support installation, maintenance and traceability in complex CPO systems.

What Information Is Needed for an ELSFP Inquiry?
Sharing the following information helps OPTICO evaluate the most suitable customized ELSFP optical interconnect configuration.
ELSFP for CPO Frequently Asked Questions
Is ELSFP the same as a standard optical transceiver?
No. ELSFP is used in CPO architectures to provide optical power from an external laser source to the optical engine. It is part of a system level optical interconnect design rather than a conventional front panel data transceiver.
Does every CPO system require an ELSFP solution?
Not necessarily. The use of ELSFP depends on the system architecture, laser source design, serviceability target and thermal management requirement. It is one practical approach for external laser source connectivity in CPO systems.
Can OPTICO support customized ELSFP optical interconnect assemblies?
Yes. OPTICO can support customized ELSFP optical interconnect solutions based on the required interface, fiber type, fiber count, routing layout, optical performance target and production quantity.
