Polarization Insensitive Isolator Single mode, 1030-2050nm

An optical isolator (also known as Faraday isolator) is a magneto-optical device that preferentially transmits light in one direction while absorbing or displacing backward light. It can protect light sources from back reflection and signal interference, avoiding the intensity noise and optical damage.

An optical isolation system typically consists of three main components, namely, input polarizer, Faraday rotator, and output polarizer (also called analyzer). The purpose is to allow the light signal to propagate in the forward direction and block in the opposite direction.

Compared with single-stage isolator, dual-stage isolator has additional Faraday rotator, half wave plate, and double reflection beam shifter to achieve higher isolation.  Single-stage isolator is good for systems with less light reflection interference, such as ordinary communication, low-power light source protection,  light source front-end protection, and simple modulation systems. Dual isolator is more suitable for systems that are particularly sensitive to reflection or require extremely high isolation.

Shenzhen Optico provides polarization insenitive isolators working on various wavelengths like 1030nm /1064nm/ 1080nm/ 1310nm/ 1480nm/ 1550nm/ 1940nm/ 2000nm/ 2050nm etc.

The difference between single-stage and dual-stage optical isolators

--- Isolation level: Single-mode single-stage isolator is usually between 30-35dB, while dual-stage isolator is between 45-55dB

--- Insertion loss:  Single stage isolator  0.3~0.5dB, while dual-stage 0.5~0.8dB, slightly higher

--- Optical power: Single isolator has lower power, while dual-stage has higher. Dual-stage is more suitable for high-power systems

--- Cost: Dual-stage isolator is more expensive, users should choose based on requirement and budget

How does isolators work

When in use, the incoming light signal passes through the input polarizer. The input polarizer blocks the light signals of orthogonal polarization while allowing light signals of only a specific polarization through it. The light signals then enter the Faraday rotator. There the light signal is rotated by an angle like 45°. This rotation is non-reciprocal. The light signal gets horizontally polarized after the rotation of polarization. When this horizontally polarized light signal is reflected in the backward direction, the input polarizer, being a vertical polarizer, rejects it. Finally, only the forwar-direction light signals get through the output polarizer.
