A: Most manufacturers employ small, light and flexible cables called microcables or microcore cables. The structure features 250 μm buffer fiber, aramid yarn-strength members and single or double outer jacket. Cables are typically built using 8 fibers or 12 fiber subunits that are housed in an outer sheath. Note: 8 to 24 cores usually do not require an outer sheath because all fibers are in one unit. Compared to conventional tightly buffered or loosely bushed cables, this cable construction reduces space by about 65% and has a similar reduction in weight. The cable also has a small bending radius.
